Repair Your Axle and Differential

When it comes about the safety of your vehicle, one thing that you should not neglect is the axle of your car. Did you know the axle is of the most important parts of your car? Like your brakes, axles are responsible for holding the entire vehicle weight. Axles are connected the vehicle’s wheels and in play a vital role in driving your car or truck. In some vehicles, axles also form an integral part of the steering system.

The Differential

differential service and repair

Car and Truck differential service involves draining the old fluid and adding fresh lubricant.

People often think that axle is a bar between two wheels, such as a train’s car. The truth is actually different. Most axles are complex unlike the simple ones seen in trains. These days, most axles are split axles. This means the wheel on each side is attached to a separate shaft. This attachment allows independent suspension of the left and right wheels for a much smoother ride. This also lets the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds when the car or truck turns. The result is improved traction and extended tire life. At the union of the two independent axles is the differential.

Protective Covering for Axles

In most cars, axle is connected by the wheel by the CV joint which is covered by a CV joint boot. The CV boot is a protective flexible rubber covering. It is important that the boot is not leaking or cracked. This can cause leakage in brake fluid which can damage the CV joints.

Detecting Axle Damage

One of easiest ways to detect axle damage is to listen for axle shaft noise. You can easily distinguish this from gear noise, as it occurs in all the driving modes. The list below are some other recommended ways you can detect axle damage.

  • Vibrations occurring from engine stress or driveline flexible modes or exhaust system
  • Vibrations caused from various unbalanced rotating parts of the vehicle
  • Resonance vibrations of the frame and body structures due to rotating of unbalanced parts

Detecting Differential Leakage

Repairing differential leakage should be done by a professional mechanic. Here are some simple indications differential leakage may be occuring in a car or truck.

  • If your car doesn’t go into any gear
  • If your car’s clutch doesn’t work smoothly
  • If your car has a manual transmission and the engine produces a speeding up sound when it is really not speeding up
