A vehicle’s charging system consists of 3 major components:

Alternator

Mechanical device driven by the engine accessory belt. It provides continuous voltage to replenish the battery while the engine is running.

Voltage Regulator

Monitors the battery’s state of charge and adjusts alternator activity as necessary to charge the vehicle’s battery

Battery

An electrical reservoir used to store electrical energy until it is needed by the vehicle’s starting system to crank the engine.

Battery, Alternator, Voltage Regulator… The Car Charging and Ignition Systems

Not long after you are driving the headlights dim, the engine starts to miss. In less than five miles your engine dies, along with everything else in the car. Guess what? No power. What you have just experienced is your alternator breathing its last breath. Your first thought might have been the battery is dying. In a sense, you would be right because the battery and the alternator are related.

Signs your Charging System needs attention

  • Nothing happens or you just hear clicking when you turn the key
  • Your engine struggles to turn over
  • Your headlights get brighter when you accelerate
  • A battery warning light comes on in the dashboard
